The Holy Monastery of the Forty Great Martyrs is a peaceful and inspiring sanctuary for resident monks, with a Catholic Church, communal dining area, and other monastic spaces.
The old monastery is nestled in a ravine beside the Sofroni stream and is only 20 minutes from Sparta. Its cave Church, built in 1305, features breathtaking frescoes by Konstantinos Manassis. The monastery has a splendid library and museum for visitors to explore. Unfortunately, a 13th-century image of the Holy Forty Martyrs was stolen in 1980.
