The Monastery of Panagia Zerbitsa is a protected historical monument in the Taygetos mountain, just a short drive from Sparta. It was built in 1639 and is home to a revered icon, Panagia Vrefokratousa. The Catholicon follows the cruciform inscribed type of Mount Athos churches and is adorned with frescoes dating back to 1669.
The monastery has expanded by constructing three new complexes and has a museum showcasing essential artefacts. It engages in Byzantine hagiography, gold embroidery, weaving, and beekeeping activities. Visitors are welcomed into the "catacombs" upon entering the monastery, honouring various martyrs. The community celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary every August 23rd.
